FAQ
How is my rating calculated?
Like in chess. Every question has its own rating, and the game works out your chances of getting it right from the gap between your rating and its rating, allowing for luck (one chance in four with four choices, one in two for true or false). A correct answer earns more points the harder the question was for you; a wrong answer costs more the easier it was for you.
For a player rated 1,500 with more than 200 answers, on a question that has been played plenty:
| Question | Chance of success | Correct | Wrong | Skipped |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 85% | +3 | −17 | −12 |
| Hard | 51% | +10 | −10 | −5 |
| Infernal | 36% | +13 | −7 | −2 |
At first your rating moves faster (a bigger factor for your first 30 answers, then up to 200), to find your level quickly.
I got almost everything right and my rating went down. Why?
Because a mistake on an easy question is expensive, and a correct answer to an easy question earns little. If you get 9 easy questions out of 10, you did slightly worse than your rating predicted, so it drops a little. That is on purpose: to climb, you need to get questions at your level or harder.
Do I have a single rating?
No. You have a rating in every category, an overall rating (all categories, competitive excluded) and a competitive rating. Each answer moves the category rating and the overall rating.
What do Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert and Infernal mean?
They are rating bands. A question gets a level when it is written, then its rating moves with every player’s answers: when strong players miss it, it goes up; when beginners get it, it goes down. Its displayed level can therefore change over time. The starting rating of each level is recalibrated now and then from real answers.
Why does a new question count less?
While a question has few answers, we do not really know yet whether it is easy or hard. So it moves your rating less, both ways, and counts fully from its 5th answer.
How are game points counted?
- Series and endless: a correct answer is worth 100 points for an Easy question, 150 Medium, 200 Hard, 300 Expert and 400 Infernal, plus 10 points per correct answer in a row (up to 100 more).
- Competitive: 100 points, plus up to 100 for speed, all multiplied by the level (×1 to ×4).
- Survival: the ranking counts your correct answers before the third mistake.
A wrong answer does not take game points away: it only resets your streak (and costs a life in survival).
Can I skip a question?
Only in endless mode, and once every 10 questions. Skipping is not free: for your rating, the question counts as if you had answered at random, so you lose a little (see the table above). It does not count in your success rate.
In series, survival, competitive and challenges, you cannot skip. An abandoned question (page reloaded, new game started, window left in competitive) counts as a wrong answer.
Why am I not in the rankings?
- Your profile must be public (checkbox in “My account”).
- You need 20 answers for the overall ranking, 10 in a category for its ranking, 15 in competitive.
- In the overall ranking, a player who skipped more than 10% of their last 200 questions no longer appears. They keep their rating and statistics, and come back as soon as they skip less; a message explains it in their statistics.
What do the weekly rankings count?
The last seven days: the best series, the longest survival (in questions survived, challenges included), the best competitive round and the number of answers. The all-time survival record and the ratings count since the beginning.
And the league?
Every correct answer earns league points according to its level: 10 (Easy) to 40 (Infernal), one and a half times as many in competitive. On Monday, the top of your group moves up a tier and the bottom moves down.
What are the Specialist and Devil titles?
Specialist: 75% correct on more than 20 answers in a category. Devil: 90% on more than 100. Skipped questions do not count. Every title carries its level, from Easy to Infernal: the highest one where you meet the mark counting only questions of that level or harder. A “Devil (Easy)” and a “Devil (Infernal)” are not the same thing.
An answer looks wrong to me.
After each answer, the “Report” button warns us. A question that is often reported, or that the best players strangely miss, is taken out of play until it is checked.
